Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has announced plans for a third airport in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) to address rising air traffic demands. Located in Palghar, about 95 kilometers from Mumbai, this new airport will complement the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) and the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA).
Address to the Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde emphasized the urgent need for a new airport in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) due to the saturation of existing facilities. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), the second busiest airport in India, is approaching its capacity limit, prompting the need for additional infrastructure. The first phase of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is expected to begin operations by the end of 2024, with plans to eventually accommodate 40 million passengers annually.
Palghar, situated within the MMR and known for its beautiful coastline, has been identified as a potential location for the new airport. Specific sites at Kelva-Mahim and Dapchari have been proposed for development. However, the process of land acquisition has not yet started, as it awaits further approvals and clearances from relevant authorities. This new airport aims to enhance air connectivity, support regional development, and alleviate pressure on existing airports in the region.
The Palghar airport project is essential for managing future air traffic between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai airports. Officials have indicated that planning and development efforts are in progress to create a facility that will initially accommodate small aircraft, emergency operations, and VIP movements. The airport is expected to begin operations with limited capacity, prioritizing critical services such as disaster relief and executive travel. Future expansions will be strategically planned to meet increasing aviation demands, ultimately enhancing connectivity and driving economic growth throughout the region.
